So much progress, in fact, that you may soon find the WhatsApp-focused cryptocurrency listed on a bitcoin exchange near you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FACEBOOK HAS ALREADY MET WITH BITCOIN EXCHANGES TO DISCUSS ITS WHATSAPP TOKEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to The New York Times, Facebook has already quietly met with multiple&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ccn.com\/bitcoin-exchanges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bitcoin exchanges<\/a>&nbsp;to discuss using their platforms to issue the token to consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/28\/technology\/cryptocurrency-facebook-telegram.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>, which was authored by Nathaniel Popper and Mike Isaac:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Facebook project is far enough along that the social networking giant has held conversations with cryptocurrency exchanges about selling the Facebook coin to consumers, said four people briefed on the negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Confirming previous\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-12-21\/facebook-is-said-to-develop-stablecoin-for-whatsapp-transfers\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>, Popper and Isaac cite five anonymous sources who say that the cryptocurrency will be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccn.com\/facebook-developing-cryptocurrency-for-whatsapp-transfers-amidst-another-privacy-scandal\">integrated<\/a>\u00a0directly into WhatsApp, which had more than\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/260819\/number-of-monthly-active-whatsapp-users\/\" target=\"_blank\">1.5 billion<\/a>monthly active users as of December 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/whatsapp-monthly-users.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ccn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/whatsapp-monthly-users.png\" alt=\"whatsapp monthly users\" class=\"wp-image-164642\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>WhatsApp\u2019s 1.5 billion active users could soon have access to Facebook\u2019s cryptocurrency. | Source: Statista<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that Facebook already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-engineering-overhaul-impact-of-instagram-whatapp-migration-2019-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;plans to unite the back-end system that runs WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, the cryptocurrency could soon be available to as many as 2.7 billion consumers \u2013 roughly 35 percent of the world\u2019s population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cryptocurrency would be pegged to the value of the US dollar, providing users with an easy \u2013 and cheap \u2013 way to send money across international borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FACEBOOK GOES TO GREAT LENGTHS TO KEEP CRYPTO EFFORTS SECRET<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/htxxyE4nHGU\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook\u2019s crypto division has already made at least one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccn.com\/facebooks-crypto-shopping-spree-isnt-over-yet\">acquisition<\/a>, smart contract development firm Chainspace. The Information reports that the company also met with Algorand, Keybase, and the now-shuttered stablecoin project Basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Including the former Chainspace employees, Facebook\u2019s cryptocurrency division now has more than 50 dedicated engineers. The project is led by David Marcus, a former president of PayPal who more recently led the company\u2019s Messenger team. Notably, he also sat on the board of US crypto exchange giant Coinbase before&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccn.com\/somethings-brewing-at-facebooks-cryptocurrency-division\">resigning<\/a>&nbsp;around the same time he took control of the social media giant\u2019s blockchain efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marcus and Facebook are keeping a tight lid on the operation.
