<\/a><\/p>\n There’s strong support among G7 countries for regulating cryptocurrencies<\/p>\n In its Dec. 7\u00a0press release<\/a>, the United States Department of the Treasury (USDT) mentions that the finance ministers of the G7 countries voiced strong support for regulating cryptocurrencies during a recent video conference:<\/p>\n There is strong support across the G7 on the need to regulate digital currencies.\u00a0Ministers and Governors reiterated support for the G7 joint statement on digital payments issued in October.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The meeting\u2014which included outgoing U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin\u2014touched upon fending off\u00a0illegal use cases of digital assets.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n In late November, Bitcoin nosedived\u00a0after Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong spilled the\u00a0beans about a crackdown on self-custodied cryptocurrency wallets mulled over by Mnuchin.<\/p>\n Mnuchin has been the source of long-simmering angst in the cryptocurrency community because of his anti-crypto statements. Back in July 2019, he made it clear that the novel asset class would be tamed with\u00a0“very, very strong” regulations<\/a>. According to a book penned by ex-National Security Adviser John Bolton, he was personally\u00a0told by U.S. President Donald Trump to clamp down on Bitcoin.<\/p>\n This hostility runs far beyond partisan lines.\u00a0His successor\u2014former Federal Reserve\u00a0chair\u00a0Janet Yellen\u2014is not a Bitcoin fan either.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the\u00a0STABLE act that was introduced by far-left\u00a0Democratic lawmaker\u00a0Rashida Tlaib\u00a0aims to make it illegal to issue stablecoins that are not green lit by federal agencies.<\/p>\nRegulatory risks<\/h2>\n
